A sideways look at Folk Art

This talk unpacks a treasure box of  folk art, from canal ware to weathercocks, beer to buttons – and some quilts that use folk arts as inspiration. Not too serious, plenty to look at, and to handle.

This talk is enjoyed by quilt groups and general interest groups too.

A folk-art workshop is available to complement this talk.

From the Sublime to the …

Focusing on my collection of vintage quilts, English and Welsh, beautiful and otherwise, and how they have influenced my own work.  Just quilts – and yes, you can handle all of them.

Taking the mystery out of quilt judging

As a trained quilt judge, who has worked at many different shows, I’m happy to give you an insight into the process, and answer your questions.  Find out how judges are trained and what they look for.
I will bring small (anonymous) quilts and judging forms so that you can have a go at judging yourselves.  This always produces a lively discussion!

Read about my quilt judging experience here.

Workshops

GENERAL INFORMATION
My in-person talks are fairly informal, and generally last about an hour, with time for questions.  I always bring quilts with me which people are welcome to handle. My talks don’t use technology, as this is easier for the host group. No slides, powerpoint, or computers to worry about.

For workshops, I send a comprehensive requirements list several weeks before the date, and generally have some spare items with me.  Any additional costs (items which need to be purchased from me) will be notified ahead of time.  I aim to keep material costs low and encourage recycling and sharing.

MEETING THE CHALLENGE, or Why did I think that was a good idea?

Many of us take part in "challenges".  Sometimes we wish we hadn't agreed, and sometimes we surprise ourselves with what we can make.  Here are some highs, lows, and funny stories of my experiences with challenges.
